DISTRICT 9 COMMITTEE MEETING

NOVEMBER 10, 2004

RIDGWAY, PA

 

On November 10, 2004, the District 9 Committee met at Aiello’s Café in Ridgway, PA.  The following members were present: Mike Brown, Randy Cathcart, Roger Collins, Gary Elder, Tony Flint, Denny Geitner, Jerry Linsenbigler, Jim Manners, Carla Smith, Dave Stanley, Aaron Straub, Bob Tonkin, Susan Valentine, Cindy Wagner, Tom Wagner, and Bob Wicker.

A motion was made by Tony Flint and seconded by Roger Collins to accept the minutes of the October 20, 2004 meeting.  The motion carried. 

FINANCE:

A motion was made by Susan Valentine and seconded by Aaron Straub to accept the treasurer’s report.  The motion carried.

                A motion was made by Aaron Straub and seconded by Susan Valentine to authorize the payment of bills.  The motion carried.

                Discussion was held concerning the cost of medical care at district events.  A committee was named to make recommendations to the district committee related to the cost of medical care at district events.  Serving on the committee are Roger Collins, Denny Geitner, Gary Elder, and Tom Wagner.  The committee should report at the January meeting.

 

COMMUNICATIONS:

CHAIRMAN’S UPDATE:

                The district committee is attempting to establish a list of all schools that have cooperative sports agreements. 

                The starting date for football, as well as all fall sports, for the 2006 school year was discussed.  Input from superintendents and principals will be sought.

                Schools can have input to the various PIAA steering committees through their District 9 representative.

                The Board of Directors will consider moving Forest County from District 10 to District 9.

 

ADMINISTRATIVE:

                The present power rating system will be used throughout the 2004 – 2005 school year.  The system will be evaluated at the end of each sports season.

                 In sports that District 9 teams qualify for inter-district play with Districts 6 or 10, written agreements will be sought with these districts.

                Recommendations for the dates of the 2007 – 2008 basketball season will be sought.

                A motion was made by Bob Wicker and seconded by Carla Smith to grant athletic eligibility to the following foreign exchange students:

The motion carried unanimously.

                A motion was made by Gary Elder and seconded by Carla Smith to grant athletic eligibility to Imsook Lee, a student at DuBois Central Catholic High School, as an international student.  The motion carried with one opposing vote.

                A motion was made by Aaron Straub and seconded by Tony Flint to grant athletic eligibility to Benjamin Villar, a student at Venango Catholic High school.  The motion carried.

                A motion was made by Gary Elder and seconded by Roger Collins to grant athletic eligibility to Brian Dowell and David Dowell, students at Otto-Eldred High School.  The motion carried.

                                A letter was received from Elk County Catholic High School concerning the use of an eligible player in a junior varsity football game against St. Marys Area High School.  The Elk County Catholic High School administration took the appropriate action to correct the situation and to prevent a similar incident form occurring in the future.  No additional action was necessary.

                The date for the annual principals’ meeting and banquet will be April 6, 2005.

                A letter was received from Chris Dworek, president of the District 9 Football Coaches Association, updating the district committee about their recent coaches meetings.

               

ADMINISTRATIVE COMMITTEES:

                Denny Gietner, officials’ representative, spoke to the District 9 Athletic Directors Association.

                At the January meeting discussion will be held concerning situations where unintentional mistakes are made on entry forms for district tournaments and how to correct the situation when a mistake is made.

                Fall sports merchandise is still being sold.  Schools that want to purchase any merchandise should contact Jerry Linsenbigler.

                During the fall sports season, District 9 had six disqualifications for unsportsmanlike conduct.

 

SPORTS COMMITTEES:

Cross Country:    Gary Elder, Chairman

Surveys evaluating the 2004 cross country meet will be sent to member schools.

 

Golf:                       Tony Flint, Chairman

There may be a problem with the dates for the boys’ district golf championships.  The golf committee will evaluate the tournament dates, as well as, mail information concerning hosting the district golf tournament the next two years.

 

Soccer:                  Tom Wagner, Chairman

Any major changes for the 2005 – 2006 district soccer tournament will be discussed at the January district committee meeting.

 

Tennis:                  Aaron Straub, Chairman

A concern prior to the start of the tournament was using two sites to hold the competition.  This did not become a problem running the tournament.

 

Volleyball:            Aaron Straub, Chairman

The volleyball committee will send surveys to schools seeking input for next year’s tournament.

 

Swimming and Diving:  Gary Elder, Chairman

There will be online entries for this year’s meet.  Qualifying standards will be mailed in the near future.

 

Basketball:           Jim Manners, Chairman

There will be no changes in the method of seeding teams for the district tournament this year.

 

The next District 9 Committee meeting will be at Aiello’s Café Ridgway, PA on January 19, 2005.  There will a meeting for administrators and athletic directors at 11:00 AM.

 

A motion was made by Tom Wagner and seconded by Roger Collins to adjourn the meeting.  The motion carried.
