JUNE 8, 2011
The District 9 Committee held the June 8, 2011 meeting at Aiello’s Café in Ridgway, PA. The meeting was called to order by Chairman Jim Manners. The following members were present: Ed Babcock, Bud Brennen, Randy Cathcart, Roger Collins, Kevin Doverspike, Tony Flint, Sandi Hanes, Jim Manners, Aaron Straub, Bob Tonkin, Tom Wagner, Susan Valentine, Bill Vassallo, Tim Walter, and Bob Wicker.
A motion was made by Roger Collins and seconded by Randy Cathcart to accept the minutes of the April 2011 meeting with one correction (Under communications -Letters were received from Port Allegany High School and Kane Area Middle School).
The motion carried unanimously.
A motion was made by Roger Collins and seconded by Tim Walters to accept the treasurer’s reports. The motion carried unanimously. Accounts payable were reviewed.
Financial reports from the baseball, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, and volleyball tournaments were presented.
Discussion concerning the cost and format to evaluate officials and the number of officials used at district events will be discussed at the July meeting. A survey of other PIAA districts will be considered.
A letter of resignation was received from Mr. Ed Babcock, District 9 School Board Representative. A motion was made by Roger Collins and seconded by Randy Cathcart to accept Mr. Babcock’s resignation. The district committee would like to thank Ed for all the years of service to the students, schools, and committee in District 9.
A letter was received from the Pennsylvania State School Boards Association naming Daniel F. Kysor from Port Allegany to fill the vacant position.
The summary of the May Board of Directors meeting has been e-mailed to District 9 principals.
Item: IX. – Golf – there will be two classifications beginning in 2012 but will have little impact on District 9 tournaments
Item: X. – Wrestling – please review the changes in weight classes and the method of counting points for dual meet tournaments
Item: XI. – Basketball – beginning in the 2012 season there will be no “play-in” games
Item: XII. – Medical Advisory Committee - CIPPE Form – form has been up-dated and the Medical Advisory Committee will meet in February rather than June
Other items of special interest – please read and review the cooperative sponsorship of a sport
The Board of Directors did not pass a reduction in the permitted number of athletic contests.
A fifteen week football season will be discussed at the July Board of Directors meeting.
A motion was made by Aaron Straub and seconded by Randy Cathcart to retain Tom Elling and Barry Kline to operate the District 9 Website for the 2011 – 2011 year. The motion carried unanimously.
A motion was made by Tom Wagner and seconded by Tony Flint to deny a Bradford Area High School student an additional year of eligibility based on Article I Section 3. The motion carried with Tim Walters abstaining.
A possible District 9 Principals and Athletic Directors workshop to be held in October will be discussed at the August meeting.
The PIAA meeting schedule was presented. A copy of the schedule will be included in the 2011 – 2012 copy of “Quick Facts.”
The NFHS Convention will be held in Philadelphia.
The audit committee will meet at Aiello’s café on July 13, 2011 at 9:00 AM. A meeting of the budget committee will follow the audit meeting.
A motion was made by Tony Flint and seconded by Roger Collins to present Bradford Area High School the 2010 – 2011 District 9 PIAA Sportsmanship Award. The motion carried unanimously.
A motion was made by Randy Cathcart and seconded by Sandi Hanes to present Redbank Valley High School the 2010 – 2011 District 9 PIAA Sportsmanship Award. The motion carried unanimously.
A motion was made by Roger Collins and seconded by Susan Valentine to present Ridgway Area High School the 2010 – 2011 District 9 PIAA Sportsmanship Award. The motion carried unanimously.
SPORTS SPECIFIC COMMITTEE:
FOOTBALL: The football committee will discuss playing only final games at a neutral site.
VOLLEYBALL – BOYS: The format for the 2011–2012 tournament will follow this years’ format.
BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL: For next year, the date to seed the teams will be moved earlier.
The next District 9 meeting will be on August 8, 2011 at a site and time to be determined.
