DISTRICT 9 COMMITTEE MEETING

AUGUST 13, 2003

ST. MARYS, PA

 

The August 13, 2003 meeting of the District 9 Committee was held at Elk County Catholic High School in St. Marys, PA.  Chairman Hoover called the meeting to order.

The following members were present: D.J. Bevevino, Roger Collins, Gary Elder, Tony Flint, Terry Hoover, Jeff Jovenitti, Jerry Linsenbigler, Jim Manners, Aaron Straub, Susan Valentine, and Bob Wicker.

A motion was made by Jeff Jovenitti and seconded by Roger Collins to accept the minutes of the June 11, 2003 meeting.  The motion carried.

A motion was made Gary Elder and seconded by Jerry Linsenbigler to accept the treasurer’s report.  The motion carried.

A motion was made by Jim Manners and seconded by Sue Valentine to authorize the payment of bills.  The motion carried. 

 

COMMUNICATIONS:

A letter was received from Mr. Carl Salser, President of KSAC and Principal of Union High School.  The letter informed the committee that the Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference supports the admission of Cranberry Area High School, East Forest Area High School, Rocky Grove High School, Venango Catholic High School, and West Forest Area High School, as well as, any other high school making application to District 9.

 

ATHLETIC ELIGIBILITY:

A motion was made by Jim Manners and seconded by D.J. Bevevino to grant athletic eligibility to Andriy Nahnichuk, a foreign exchange student at Johnsonburg Area High School, pending the proper paper work.  The motion carried.

A motion was made by Susan Valentine and seconded by Roger Collins to grant athletic eligibility to Kristan K. Hearst, a student at Clarion Area High School, pending the proper paper work.  This is an Article VI and Section 8 transfer.  The motion carried.

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

 

AUDIT COMMITTEE: (SUSAN VALENTINE, CHAIRPERSON)

                On July 9, 2003, Carl Salser, Rick Moore, and Susan Valentine audited the District 9 financial records.  The financial records were found to be in excellent order.

               

AWARDS: (AARON STRAUB, CHAIRPERSON)

                The cost of awards for the 2003 – 2004 school year will be the same as last year.

 

CHEERLEADING: (JEFF JOVENITTI, CHARIMAN)

                Cheerleading competition will be held at Clarion University on November 8, 2003.

 

FINANCE: (BOB TONKIN, CHAIRPERSON)

                The finance committee will meet before the September meeting to discuss various ways to generate more revenue and ways to reduce expenses.

 

MERCHANDISE: (JERRY LINSENBIGLER, CHAIRPERSON)

                During the 2003 –2004 school year, there will be an attempt to expand the sale of District 9 merchandise.

 

SPORTSMANSHIP: (TONY FLINT, CHAIRPERSON)

                Schools that have had coaches or players disqualified will not be listed in the PIAA Newsletter.  Disqualifications from one school year will not be carried over to the next school year.

 

 

FOOTBALL: (LARRY STINER, CHAIRPERSON)

                There is a concern that the method to qualify for the “A” playoff games has not been addressed by the District 9 committee.

 

TRACK AND FIELD: (BOB TONKIN, CHAIRPERSON)

                District 9 concerns dealing with track rules for disqualification of athletes, jewelry rule, and adding meets after a team completes its season were discussed at the track and field steering committee.  Dr. Lombardi will clarify these items in a newsletter to track and field officials.

                The location for “AAA” and “AA” track and field meets will be set at the September District 9 committee meeting.

               

VOLLEYBALL (AARON STRAUB, CHAIRPERSON)

                The Board of Directors has given permission to leagues to play either three or five games of rally scoring for junior high and junior varsity contests.

 

OLD BUSINESS:

                A motion was made by D.J. Bevevino and seconded by Jeff Jovenitti to accept Cranberry Area High School, Venango Catholic High School, and Rocky Grove High School as District 9 members beginning the 2004 – 2005 school year.  The motion carried.

                The District 9 Committee is waiting letters of release from the District 10 Committee before acting on the membership of East Forest Area High School, West Forest Area High School, and Sheffield Area High School in District 9.

A motion was made by Bob Wicker and seconded by Gary Elder to accept the appointments of the District 9 chairman to various sports and steering committees for the 2003 – 2004 school year.  The motion carried.

                A motion was made by D.J. Bevevino and seconded by Susan Valentine to permit all District 9 Committee members, voting and non-voting, to serve as District 9 Chairpersons.  A person who is not a member of the District 9 Committee cannot serve as a committee chairperson.  The motion carried.

                The District 9 chairman is a member of all committees.  The District 9 officials’ representative is a member of all sports related committees.

 

NEW BUSINESS:

                A motion was made by Gary Elder and seconded by Jeff Jovenitti to approve the 2003 – 2004 District 9 calendar.  The motion carried.

                In order to determine the use of the District 9 website, a request will be made to the District 9 Webmaster to add a “counter” to the website.

                Note:  A freshman can practice with the varsity squad for a 21 day period and participate in scrimmages with the varsity squad before a determination is made that the athlete is a member of the varsity or junior high team.  If the athlete participates in a contest, he is a member of the squad at which level he/she participated.

                The next District 9 meeting will be on September 24, 2003 at Aiello’s Café in Ridgway at 11:00 am.

                A motion was made by Tony Flint and seconded by Gary Elder for the meeting to adjourn.  The motion carried.  The meeting adjourned at 12:30.
