DISTRICT 9 COMMITTEE MEETING
RIDGWAY, PA
The June 11, 2003 meeting of the District 9 Committee was held at Aiello’s Café in Ridgway, PA. Chairman Hoover called the meeting to order.
The following members were present: D.J. Bevevino, Gary Elder, Tony Flint, Denny Geitner, Terry Hoover, Jeff Jovenitti, Jerry Linsenbigler, Jim Manners, Larry Stiner, Aaron Straub, Susan Valentine, Cindy Wagner, Tom Wagner, and Bob Wicker.
A motion was made by Jim Manners and seconded by Susan Valentine to accept the minutes of the April 2, 2003 meeting. The motion carried.
A motion was made by Tony Flint and seconded by Gary Elder to accept the treasurer’s report. The motion carried.
A motion was made by Jim Manners and by Jeff Jovenitti to authorize the payment of bills. The motion carried.
The committee discussed various ways to increase revenue including increasing the cost of tickets, charging admission to all District 9 events, charging a tournament participation fee for teams and athletes entering District 9 events, setting limits to be paid to schools for hosting district events, playing contests at sites that are most economic, etc. The discussion will continue at the August meeting.
COMMUNICATIONS:
A motion was made by D.J. Bevevino and seconded by Bob Wicker to grant athletic eligibility to Robert Monter, a foreign exchange student at Northern Potter High School. The motion carried.
A letter was received from Mr. James Estep, Principal of Brookville Area High School. The steps Brookville Area High School took in order to have their wrestling program removed form probation were provided. A motion was made by Larry Stiner and seconded by Gary Edler to remove Brookville Area High School’s wrestling program from probation. The motion carried.
A motion was made by Jim Manners and seconded by D.J. Bevevino to accept the modifications to the cooperative sports agreement between Punxsutawney Christian School and Punxsutawney Area High School. The schools agreed to coop in boys’ and girls’ soccer. The motion carried.
Letters were received from Cranberry Area School District, Rocky Grove School District, and Venango Catholic High School requesting membership in District 9. A motion was made by Gary Elder and seconded by D.J. Bevevino to accept the three schools into District 9. A motion was made by Jeff Jovenitti and seconded by Bob Wicker to table the motion, to request Chairman Hoover write a letter to all District 9 principals informing them of the three schools requests, and to vote to accept or reject the requests at the August meeting. The motion carried.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
BASEBALL (LARRY STINER, CHAIRPERSON)
The completed baseball report has been E-mailed to committee members.
SOFTBALL (JERRY LINSENBIGLER, CHAIRPERSON
One game report must be added to the final softball report. The final report will be E-mailed to committee members.
TRACK AND FIELD (BOB TONKIN, CHAIRPERSON)
The financial report was presented to the committee. There were a number of incidents that occurred at the district championship meets (incidents that affect all track and field meets) that will be discussed at the PIAA Track and Field Steering Committee Meeting in June. A summary of the items and the discussion will be included in the August minutes. The sites for the 2004 district track and field meets will be decided at the August meeting.
AUDIT COMMITTEE: (SUSAN VALENTINE, CHAIRPERSON)
The audit committee will meet on July 9, 2003 at a site to be determined.
AWARDS: (AARON STRAUB, CHAIRPERSON)
The cost of awards to the district committee for the 2002 – 2003 year was approximately $10,500.00. The cost to schools purchasing extra awards will remain at $5.25 per award.
OLD BUSINESS:
A motion was made by Gary Elder and seconded by Denny Geitner to name Bob Tonkin as the District 9 secretary/treasure for the 2003 – 2004 year. The motion carried.
The Board of Directors’ Appeal Committee upheld a District 9 eligibility decision dealing with the transfer of a student from Punxsutawney Area High School to central Catholic High School.
The junior high/middle school representative elected to the district committee will represent District 9 junior high/middle schools at the PIAA Junior High /Middle School Steering Committee.
NEW BUSINESS:
The 2003 – 2004 District 9 Calendar will be presented at the August meeting.
Chairman Hoover made assignments for the PIAA Steering Committees.
A summary of the May 23, 2003 Board of Director’s Meeting was E-mailed to committee members.
A summary of the 2003 – 2004 CSIET accredited foreign exchange student programs was given to committee members.
Committee members who have any changes for the 2003 – 2004 District 9 Handbook should have their changes to Terry Hoover or Aaron Straub by the August meeting.
Discussion was held concerning the “ 20 days attendance” rule and how schools apply the rule. Further discussion will be held at the August meeting.
A way to honor Mr. Frank Palaggo will be discussed at the August meeting.
The next District 9 Committee meeting will be on August 13, 2003, at Elk County Catholic High School, at 9:30 a.m.
A motion was made by Tony Flint and seconded by Larry Stiner to adjourn. The motion carried. The meeting adjourned at 12:20 p.m.
