COMMITTEE REPORTS:

BASKETBALL (Jim Manners, Chairman)

The winning teams from the District 9 Tournament were announced.

After Clarion University officials denied a request from the A.C. Valley High School boys’ basketball coach to practice at Tippin Gym prior to a district playoff game, the team practiced at Tippin Gym.   A letter from the boys’ basketball coach was read.  A letter from the A.C. Valley administration is to be received by the district committee.  A motion was made by Roger Collins and seconded by Gary Elder to table the issue until the April meeting.  The motion carried.

There was a concern with the P.I.A.A. appointing District 9 officials to officiate an inter-district game involving a District 9 team.  This may be an agenda item for the basketball steering committee.

A list of the certified athletic trainers in District 9 was provided to the members of the committee.

A questionnaire will be sent to District 9 schools requesting input about the 2003 – 2004 basketball tournament.

Using the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford for a district playoff game received positive comments.

The District 9 basketball committee will meet on April 20, 2004 at 10:00 AM.

WRESTLING (Terry Hoover, Chairman)

Results of the individual, regional, and state tournaments were presented.  A number of public concerns were noted.   The location of the “AA” regional tournament was discussed.

OLD BUSINESS:

Discussed the role District 9 should or should not play when a District 9 team is forced to qualify through or with another P.I.A.A. district.  This discussion will continue at a future committee meeting.

NEW BUSINESS:

At the April meeting, the committee will discuss the role of sports chairman and the relationship of the sports chairman to the entire district committee.

The decision of the district committee not to grant athletic eligibility to a Clarion Area High School student will be appealed.

The district committee does not support requiring a district to have eight schools (in the past, four schools) to be given an automatic “slot” in the state tournaments.

A motion was made by Larry Stiner and seconded by Jerry Linsenbigler to adjourn.  The motion carried.

Respectfully submitted,

Robert J. Tonkin

District 9 Secretary
