DISTRICT 9 COMMITTEE MEETING

NOVEMBER 14, 2001

RIDGWAY, PA

 

The District 9 Committee held the November 14, 2001 meeting at Aiello`s Cafe in Ridgway, PA.

 

The following members were present:  Roger Collins, Gary Elder, Tony Flint, Terry Hoover, Jeff Jovenitti, Jerry Linsenbigler, Jim Manners, Frank Palaggo, Larry Stiner, Aaron Straub, Susan Valentine, and Tom Wagner.

 

Chairman Hoover called the meeting to order at 9:40AM.

 

A motion was made by Jim Manners and seconded by Susan Valentine to accept the minutes of the October 24, 2001 meeting.  The motion carried.

A motion was made by Roger Collins and seconded by Gary Elder to accept the treasurer`s report.  The motion carried.

A motion was made by Jim Manners and seconded by Tony Flint to authorize the payment of bills.  The motion carried.

 

COMMUNICATIONS:

A motion was made by Gary Elder and seconded by Tony Flint to grant athletic eligibility to Jason Baker, a student at DuBois Central Catholic High School.  The motion carried.

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

FOOTBALL (FRANK PALAGGO, CHAIRMAN)

 

The District 9 championship teams were announced.

                AAA -    Bradford Area High School

                AA -       Karns City High School

                A -          Coudersport Area High School

 

The cost of special event insurance paid to the PIAA in order to conduct district championship events in football, basketball, and wrestling has doubled. ($100.00 per event to $200.00 per event)  The committee has requested Chairman Hoover to question the PIAA about this increase. 

 

A great deal of discussion centered on the location of sites for first round inter-district PIAA events.

 

The football committee will consider announcing additional sites for playoff games if field conditions are bad at the site the game was originally scheduled.

 

GOLF (CHAIRMEN FRANK PALAGGO AND TONY FLINT)

 

A letter will be sent to District 9 schools outlining the facility requirements to host a district golf tournament.  If a school wants to host a district golf tournament, they can respond to the letter.

 

Also, a number of proposals to change the format for the district tournaments will be include in the letter.  Consideration will be given to conducting an18 holes, 27 holes, or a 36 holes tournament.

 

SOCCER (TOM WAGNER, CHAIRMAN)

The District 9 championship teams were announced:

                A –         Boys -    Redbank Valley High School

                A –         Girls -      Karns City High School

                AA –      Boys -    Clearfield Area High School

 

 

The officials` fees and the number of officials used at district soccer matches were discussed.  The use of the home facilities for a team playing an inter-district match was considered.  (Example: if Karns City High School was one of the participating schools, could Karns City High School host an inter-district match?)

 

VOLLEYBALL (AARON STRAUB, CHAIRMAN)

DuBois Area High School entered the District 6 volleyball tournament because of the lack of schools in their classification in District 9,

Officials with connections to either the community or school where they live will not be used to officiate matches involving their hometown school.

The use of the District 9 website was very beneficial.

Discussion was held concerning the officials` fees for district volleyball.

 

BASKETBALL (JIM MANNERS, CHAIRMAN)

A District 9 Basketball Tournament Program will be available for the district tournament this year.  The program will include team photos and roster, tournament brackets, and general PIAA information.

 

OLD BUSINESS:

The District 9 Policy Manuals have been mailed to District 9 schools.

 

When the District 9 C.D. is to be renewed, the District 9 Committee will decide to join or not to join the PIAA Corporate Account Agreement.

 

NEW BUSINESS:

Students who are not passing the required number of credit at the end of a grading period cannot participate in an interscholastic scrimmage or game for a 15 day period  (9 week grading period) or 10 day period (6 weeks grading period).  The period of ineligibility begins on the day the report cards are distributed not the day the grading period ends.

 

The sponsorship of District 9 Cheerleading competition was discussed at great length.  A motion was made by Gary Elder and seconded by Jeff Jovenitti to investigate the possibility of District 9 to sponsor cheerleading competition and hold district championships.  The motion passed unanimously.

Chairman Hoover appointed a committee to investigate the District 9 sponsoring cheerleading competition.  Serving on the committee are Jeff Jovenitti, chairman, Tom Wagner and Jerry Linsenbigler.

 

The football committee will consider increasing the number of teams qualifying for the “A” football playoff games.

 

ITEMS OF INFORMATION:

If a coach or an underclass player was ejected during the last game of the season, including playoff contests, the individual cannot participate in the first game of the next sports season of the sport he/she was ejected.

 

According to the criminal code, attacking a sports official, game management, etc. is considered a felony.  Punishment can include up to a two years jail sentence and/or a $10,000.00 fine.

 

Discussion was held dealing with the number of plaques and the method of presenting plaques at championship events.

A motion was made by Tony Flint and seconded by Frank Palaggo to adjourn the meeting.  The motion passed.  The meeting was adjourned at 12:40 PM.
