DISTRICT 9 COMMITTEE MEETING

NOVEMBER 13, 2002

RIDGWAY, PA

 

The District 9 Committee held the November 13, 2002 meeting at Aiello’s Café in Ridgway, PA.

 

The following members were present:  D.J. Bevevino, Roger Collins, Gary Elder, Tony Flint, Terry Hoover, Jerry Linsenbigler, Jeff Jovenitti, Jim Manners, Aaron Straub, Larry Stiner, Susan Valentine, Cindy Wagner, Tom Wagner, and Bob Wicker.

 

Chairman Hoover called the meeting to order at 9:40 AM.

 

Chairman Hoover and the entire committee welcomed Mrs. Cindy Wagner as a member of the committee.  Mrs. Wagner will serve as the female parents’ representative to the P.I.A.A. Parents’ Advisory Committee.

 

A motion was made by Tom Wagner and seconded by Roger Collins to accept the minutes of the October 23, 2002 meeting.  The motion carried.

 

A motion was made by Tony Flint and seconded by Susan Valentine to accept the treasure’s report.  The motion carried.

 

A motion was made by Jim Manners and seconded by D.J. Bevevino to authorize the payment of bills.  The motion carried.

 

COMMUNICATIONS:

A thank-you card was received from the Frank Palaggo family.

 

Tournament forms received for the Punxsutawney Holiday Classic, the Bradford Tip-off Tournament, and the Clarion Jacks Track Invitational will be forwarded to the P.I.A.A.

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

FOOTBALL (LARRY STINER, CHAIRMAN)

The football committee will discuss the future format of the district tournament.  A summary of the costs charged by schools for the use of their facilities to host district football games will be made.

 

SOCCER (TOM WAGNER, CHAIRMAN)

Chairman Wagner asked that a District 9 Soccer Committee be formed.  Serving on the committee will be Tom Wagner (chairman), Jim Manners, Susan Valentine, Gary Elder, and Jeff Jovenitti.  Future consideration for playoff sites will include size of field, playing surface, ability to play matches at night, and the financial considerations.

 

CROSS COUNTRY (D.J. BEVEVINO, CHAIRMAN)

The results of the district championship meet were presented to the committee.  The organization of the P.I.A.A. Championship was very good.  A number of coaches voiced their concerns with the P.I.A.A. championship course.

 

VOLLEYBALL (AARON STRAUB, CHAIRMAN)

Switching the district finals from Clarion University to St. Marys Area High School appears to have been a good move.  The district received a profit from the sale of “T” shirts.

 

OLD BUSINESS:

District 9 Handbooks have been mailed to all schools.  One correction is the Annual District 9 Principals’ Meeting and Banquet will be held on April 2, 2003.  The date in the handbook is incorrect.

 

Committee members are asked to send guidelines for the position of officials’ representative to Chairman Hoover.

 

A. C. Valley High School is no longer on probation for violating the policy of the head coach being in attendance at a mandatory rules meeting.

 

Jeff Jovenitti will continue to pursue cheerleading as a sport recognized by the P.I.A.A.

 

A motion was made by Gary Elder and seconded by Bob Wicker to request the P.I.A.A. draft a constitutional amendment outlining the procedure to fill the vacancy of the officials’ representative in the event the representative can not complete his/hers’ term.  The motion carried.

 

The next meeting of the Board of Directors is on December 5, 6, and 7, 2002.

 

The district committee requests that the P.I.A.A. office will notify schools that have not had a coach in attendance at the mandatory rules meeting or need to pay the fine for non attendance in a more timely manner.

 

The process for officials’ submitting paper work to the P.I.A.A. for an athlete or a coach who was removed from a contest for unsportsmanlike conduct was discussed.

 

The Bradford Area School District must permit a student from the Beacon Light School to participate in athletics before the district committee can grant or deny athletic eligibility to a student.

 

Using the District 9 website or Internet to enter athletes or teams for district championship competition was discussed.

 

A motion was made by Tony Flint and seconded by Tom Wagner to adjourn.  The motion carried.  The meeting adjourned at 12:20 PM.

 

The next District 9 Committee meeting will be on January 22, 2003 at Aiello’s Café in Ridgway, PA.
