DISTRICT 9 COMMITTEE MEETING
RIDGWAY, PA
On October 20, 2004, the District 9 Committee met at Aiello’s Café in Ridgway, PA. The following members were present: Mike Brown, Randy Cathcart, Roger Collins, Gary Elder, Tony Flint, Denny Geitner, Jeff Jovenitti, Jerry Linsenbigler, Jim Manners, Carla Smith, Dave Stanley, Aaron Straub, Bob Tonkin, Susan Valentine, Cindy Wagner, Tom Wagner, and Bob Wicker.
A motion was made by Roger Collins and seconded by Susan Valentine to accept the minutes of the September 22, 2004 meeting. The motion carried.
FINANCE:
A motion was made by Tom Wagner and seconded by Dave Stanley to accept the treasurer’s report. The motion carried.
A motion was made by Tom Wagner and seconded by Dave Staley to authorize the payment of bills. The motion carried.
A motion was made by Carla Smith and seconded by Denny Geitner to pay the entire official’s fee if the event must be postponed (due to weather or unforeseen circumstances) once the event is started. If an event is postponed and the official returns to complete the contest, the official is paid one half of the entire amount. If the contest is postponed and an assigned official can not work the make-up date, the replacement official will be paid the entire official’s fee. The motion carried.
A motion was made by Denny Geitner and seconded by Carla Smith that the trainer of the host school be employed as the trainer for district events. If the event is held at a neutral site, the responsibility to employ a trainer rests with the game manager. The motion passed unanimously.
A motion was made by Aaron Straub and seconded by Bob Wicker that the trainer employed by District 9 be paid $65.00 per event. The motion failed by a 5 to 12 vote.
A motion was made by Denny Geitner and seconded by Gary Elder to pay a trainer $65.00 per event. If an event lasts longer than three hours, the trainer will be paid $20.00 per hour up to a maximum of $100.00. The motion passed unanimously.
The official’s fee for officiating team wrestling will be $65.00 per official.
COMMUNICATION:

CHAIRMAN UPDATE:
First Baptist Church Academy will no longer be a member of the PIAA.
Sports chairmen should review the cooperative sports agreement for the sport they chair. A summary of co-ops will be reviewed at the November meeting.
The district committee will begin to discuss obtaining corporate sponsors for championship contests.
At this time, the PIAA is not engaged in any litigation.
The sites for PIAA spring championship events have been chosen.
In the near future, the PIAA will have a new physical form.
A survey will be sent to District 9 schools concerning the starting date for the 2005 football season and increasing the length of the season by one week.
A letter was received from Redbank Valley High School informing the committee of an incident that occurred at a Redbank Valley volleyball match. The committee thanked the Redbank Valley High School’s administration for reporting the incident and taking action against the person who was responsible for the disturbance.
ADMINISTRATIVE:
A letter was received from Cornell Abraxas High School requesting admission in District 9. A motion was made by Tony Flint and seconded by Dave Stanley to accept Cornell Abraxas High School as a member of District 9. The motion passed with one person abstaining.
A motion was made by Bob Wicker and seconded by Randy Cathcart to recognize Forest County as part of District 9. The motion passed. The PIAA will move Forest County from District 10 to District 9.
The District 9 power rating system will be reviewed throughout the 2004 -2005 school year.
District 9 will use the same webmaster and server for the 2004-2005 year.
On computer generated forms, the school’s “pin” number will replace the principal’s signature.
The length and playing dates for the 2007 – 2008 basketball season will be discussed at the November meeting.
A motion was made by Gary Elder and seconded by Susan Valentine to grant athletic eligibility to the following foreign exchange students:
Adriana Morales - Venango Catholic High School
Andrea Oliva - Venango Catholic High School
Elena Tikhonova - Kane Area High School (pending paperwork)
The motion carried.
A letter was received form St. Marys Area High School requesting their girls’ cross country and girls’ track and field programs participate in a higher classification than indicated by their enrollment numbers. A motion was made by Roger Collins and seconded by Randy Cathcart to permit St. Marys Area High School to participate in AAA girls’ cross country and AAA girls’ track and field. The motion carried by a fifteen to one vote.
ADMINISTRAIVE COMMITTEES:
ATHLETIC DIRECTORS (Tom Wagner, Chairman) The athletic directors association is attempting to secure a speaker to talk on Title 9 issues.
POLICY COMMITTEE (Bob Wicker, Chairman)
A motion was made by Bob Wicker and seconded by Gary Elder to accept Policy 11.2.3 (Anonymous Complaints) for the policy manual. The motion carried.
OFFICIALS (Carla Smith and Denny Geitner, Officials’ Representatives)
A meeting was held with the soccer officials’ chapter. A seven man football officiating clinic was held prior to the start of the football playoff games. Denny Geitner spoke at the District 9 Athletic Directors’ meeting.
MERCHANDISE (Jerry Linsenbigler, Chairman)
Order forms have been sent to schools to order fall championship shirts.
CHEERLEADING (Jeff Jovenitti, Chairman)
The results of the District 9 cheerleading survey have been forwarded to the PIAA.
SPORTS COMMITTEES:
CROSS COUNTRY (Gary Elder, Chairman)
After the district meet, a survey will be sent to all schools sponsoring cross country.
GOLF (Tony Flint, Chairman)
The three year cycle for hosting district golf has ended. The golf committee will be looking for sites to host district competition. Consideration may be given to switching the dates for boys’ and girls’ golf due to a conflict with S.A.T. testing.
SOCCER (Tom Wagner, Chairman) VOLLEYBALL (Aaron Straub, Chairman)
The chairmen reviewed the brackets for the soccer and volleyball tournaments.
TENNIS (Aaron Straub, Chairman)
At the 2004 tennis tournament, splitting the courts between two sites might be a potential problem. It did not become a problem.
BASKETBALL (Jim Manners, Chairman)
The basketball committee will meet the morning of the November district committee meeting.
THE NEXT DISTRICT 9 COMMITTEE MEETING WILL BE ON NOVEMBER 10, 2004 AT 1:00 PM AT AIELLO’S CAFÉ IN RIDGWAY, PA.
A motion was made by Tony Flint and Roger Collins for the meeting to adjourn. The motion carried. The meeting adjourned at 4:00 PM.
