DISTRICT 9 COMMITTEE MEETING

SEPTEMBER 24, 2003

RIDGWAY, PA

 

On September 24, 2003, the District 9 Committee meeting was held at Aiello’s Café in Ridgway, PA.  Chairman Hoover called the meeting to order.

The following members were present: D.J. Bevevino, Roger Collins, Gary Elder, Tony Flint, Denny Geitner, Terry Hoover, Jerry Linsenbigler, Jim Manners, Larry Stiner, Aaron Straub, Susan Valentine, Cindy Wagner, Tom Wagner, and Bob Wicker.

A motion was made by D.J. Bevevino and seconded by Tony Flint to accept the minutes of the September 10, 2003 meeting with one clarification.  There is the possibility to add additional qualifiers to the District 9 boys’ and girls’ golf tournaments.  The motion carried. 

A motion was made by Jim Manners and seconded by Susan Valentine to accept the treasurer’s report.  The motion carried.

A motion was made by Bob Wicker and seconded by Roger Collins to authorize the payment of bills.  The motion carried. 

 

ELIGIBILITY:

                A motion was made by Jim Manners and seconded by Gary Elder to grant athletic eligibility to the following foreign exchange students:

                Maria Jose Andrade -          Northern Potter High School

                Esyeban D. Castellanos -    Brookville Area high School

                Marina Andrea Montane -  Clearfield Area High School

The motion carried.

 

A motion was made by Gary Elder and seconded by Larry Stiner to grant athletic eligibility to the following students under Article 6 Section 8B:

                Justin Jordan -                      to Central Catholic High School

                Tyrone Robert Pinson -      to Clarion-Limestone High School

                Chad Andrew Mchenry -    to Punxsutawney Area High School

The motion carried.

 

A motion was made by D.J. Bevevino and seconded by Jerry Linsenbigler to table an eligibility request from Elk County Catholic High School until more information is obtained.  The motion carried.

 

COMMUNICATIONS:

District 9 was notified by the PIAA that the co-operative sports agreement between Clarion Area High School and Clarion-Limestone High School in girls’ soccer has been approved.  The co-operative sports agreement between Cranberry Area High School and A C Valley High School in football has been approved.

 

The committee was read a list of the District 9 schools that have had a coach or an athlete disqualified.

 

A request was made by a cross country/track official for schools to hire a certified official to conduct cross-country meets.  Consideration may be requested at PIAA sports workshops.

 

Sports chairmen are to work with Denny Geitner, District 9 Officials’ Representative, to recommend officials to officiate inter-district events.  The recommendation list is to be provided to the PIAA office.

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

 

CHEERLEADING (Jeff Jovenitti, Chairman)

                The cheerleading competition will be held on November 8, 2003 at Clarion University.  The competition is not a District 9 sponsored activity.

FOOTBALL (Larry Stiner, Chairman)

                The football committee met prior to the district committee meeting.  The 2003 football playoff format will be the same as last year.  There is a possibility of using Clarion University’s new field for district and inter-district games.  The committee will meet prior to the October district committee meeting.

CROSS COUNTRY (D.J. Bevevino, Chairman)

                The 2003 – 2004 cross-country championships will be held at Clarion Country Park.

SOCCER (Tom Wagner, Chairman)

                The district soccer information will be sent out on Tuesday.  There is the possibility of using Clarion University as a site for district competition.  In District 9, there continues to be a problem of suitable sites for championship competition.

VOLLEYBALL (Aaron Straub, Chairman)

                The district volleyball committee will meet following the district committee meeting.  The dates and locations are list of the District 9 calendar.

GOLF (Tony Flint, Chairman)

                There may be five or more additional qualifiers for district boys’ golf.  As of today, there are no additional qualifiers for district girls’ golf.

TENNIS (Larry Stiner)

                Tennis materials have been sent to competing schools.  District 9 “AAA” schools will compete with District 6.

TRACK (Bob Tonkin, Chairman)

                After discussion with administrators of Kane Area High School, moving the district meet/meets to Kane is not a possibility for the 2004 District 9 meets.  Both the “AAA” and “AA” meets will be held at Brookville Area High School.

AWARDS (Aaron Straub, Chairman)

                The number of awards presented by the District 9 Committee was reviewed.  At championship events, consideration will be given to include an order form for additional awards.

FINANCE  (Bob Tonkin, Chairman)

                The finance committee met prior to the committee meeting.  A number of ways to increase revenue were discussed.  At the October district committee meeting, the committee will provide a detailed breakdown of revenue generating options.   It will also make recommendations for approval for methods to generate more income.

 

OLD BUSINESS:

                The 2003 – 2004 District 9 manual will not be mailed to member schools.  The manual can be located at the District 9 website.

               

                A motion was made by Aaron Straub and seconded by Larry Stiner to accept Sheffield Area High School, East Forest High School, and West Forest High School as members of District 9 beginning in the 2004 – 2005 school year.  The motion carried.

 

NEW BUSINESS:

                No new business was brought to the floor.

 

A motion was made by Tom Wagner and seconded by D.J. Bevevino to adjourn.  The motion carried.
