DISTRICT 9 COMMITTEE MEETING
ST. MARYS, PA
On August11, 2004, the District 9 Committee met at Elk County Catholic High School in St Marys, PA.
The following members were present: Roger Collins, Gary Elder, Tony Flint, Denny Geitner, Jeff Jovenitti, Jim Manners, Dave Stanley, Aaron Straub, Bob Tonkin, Susan Valentine, and Bob Wicker.
A motion was made by Tony Flint and seconded by Susan Valentine to accept the minutes of the June 16, 2004 and July 7, 2004 meetings. The motion carried.
FINANCE:
A motion was made by Bob Wicker and seconded by Tony Flint to accept the treasurer’s report. The motion carried.
A motion was made by Jerry Linsenbigler and seconded by Roger Collins to authorize the payment of bills. The motion carried.
A motion was made by Gary Elder and seconded by Tony Flint to approve changes in the fees paid to officials who work district events, except the fee paid officials who officiate team wrestling. The motion passed unanimously.
A motion was made by Gary Elder and seconded by Bob Wicker to establish the IRS rate for mileage reimbursement. The motion passed unanimously.
Denny Geitner will investigate the amount that should be paid to officials who referee team wrestling.
A motion was made by Denny Geitner and seconded by Roger Collins to pay the merchandise chairman a stipend of $200.00 per year. The motion passed unanimously.
COMMUNICATIONS:
A packet containing the District 9 and PIAA calendars, school information, committee member information, meeting dates, etc. will be mailed to schools as soon as the information is available.
Chairman Manners updated the committee on the recent Board of Directors’ meetings.
Cheerleading was discussed at the Board of Directors’ meeting. Only two PIAA districts showed a high interest level for the PIAA to recognize cheerleading as a sport. Jeff Jovenitti will survey District 9 schools to determine if there is enough interest to continue pursuing the cheerleading issue with the PIAA.
ADMINISTRATIVE:
The committee reviewed the fees schools are required to pay to enter a District 9 tournament.
A motion was made by Gary Elder and seconded by Roger Collins to grant athletic eligibility to Kurt Becker, a student at Elk County Catholic High School. The motion carried with one abstention.
A motion was made by Gary Elder and seconded by Jeff Jovenitti to grant athletic eligibility to Kristina Grove a student at Elk County Catholic High School. The motion carried with one abstention
A motion was made by Gary Elder and seconded by Jeff Jovenitti to table a request for athletic eligibility from Clearfield Area High School pending the submission of the proper paperwork. The motion carried.
Sports chairmen should contact Aaron Straub, awards chairman, concerning any changes in the number of awards to be presented at championship events.
A motion was made by Gary Elder and seconded by Bob Wicker to form a committee of the sports chairmen to examine the District 9 power rating system and report at the September 22, 2004 meeting. The motion carried.
A motion was made by Gary Elder and seconded by Aaron Straub to create the position of parliamentarian on the district committee. The motion passed unanimously.
A motion was made by Tony Flint and seconded by Jeff Jovenitti to appoint Bob Wicker as the District 9 parliamentarian. The motion carried unanimously.
A motion was made by Susan Valentine and seconded by Dave Stanley that the officials’ representatives serve on all sports committees that employ PIAA officials. The motion passed unanimously A motion was made by Bob Wicker and seconded by Gary Elder for Chairman Manners to contact the District 9 Webmaster to investigate using the PIAA the server for the district’s website. The motion passed unanimously.
A motion was made by Gary Elder and seconded by Tony Flint to present plaques to D.J. Bevevino, Terry Hoover, and Larry Stiner for their years of service to the students and schools in District 9. The motion passed unanimously.
ADMINISTRAIVE COMMITTEES:
Susan Valentine, chairman of the audit committee, reported the annual audit was conducted on July 14, 2004 and all financial records were in the proper order. A motion was made by Gary Elder and seconded by Dave Stanley to accept the report of the audit committee. The motion passed unanimously.
The policy committee will meet following the September 22, 2004 district committee meeting.
A motion was made by Gary Elder and seconded by Aaron Straub for the district chairman and assistant chairman to establish guidelines for the hearing committee to follow. The motion carried.
SPORTS COMMITTEES:
CROSS COUNTRY: (Gary Elder, Chairman)
The cross country committee toured various sites in District 9 to determine the best location to hold the district meet. The committee recommended the meet be held at the Ridgway Elementary School.
A motion was made by Denny Geitner and seconded by Dave Stanley to accept the committee’s recommendation. The motion carried unanimously.
SWIMMING AND DIVING: (Gary Elder, Chairman)
Chairman Elder updated the committee on the location of the District 6/9 Swimming and Diving meet. A motion was made by Bob Wicker and seconded by Susan Valentine to hold the meet at Clarion University. The motion carried unanimously.
CHEERLEADING: (Jeff Jovenitti, Chairman)
Cheerleading competition will be held on November 13, 2004 at 11:00 AM at Clarion University.
THE NEXT DISTRICT 9 COMMITTEE MEETING WILL BE ON SEPTEMBER 22, 2004 AT AIELLO’S CAFÉ, RIDGWAY PA AT 1:00 PM
A motion was made by Gary Elder and seconded by Susan Valentine to adjourn the meeting. The motion carried. The meeting adjourned at 1:05 PM.
