DISTRICT 9 COMMITTEE MEETING
RIDGWAY, PA
On June 16, 2004, the District 9 Committee met at Aiello’s Café in Ridgeway, PA.
The following members were present: Roger Collins, Gary Elder, Tony Flint, Denny Geitner, Jeff Jovenitti, Jim Manners, Aaron Straub, Susan Valentine, Cindy Wagner, Tom Wagner, and Bob Wicker
Due to the absence of the chairman and the assistant chairman, a motion was made by Roger Collins and seconded by Sue Valentine to authorize Jim Manners to act as chairman for the June 16, 2004 meeting.
A motion was made by Bob Wicker and seconded by Tom Wagner to accept the minutes of the April 20, 2004 meeting. The motion carried.
A motion was made by Gary Elder and seconded by Aaron Straub to accept the treasurer’s report. The motion carried.
Discussion was held concerning the amount to pay officials for umpiring baseball and softball games. A motion was made by Aaron Straub and seconded by Gary Elder to pay officials according to the fee schedule adopted by the district committee. The motion carried unanimously.
A motion was made by Tony Flint and seconded by Roger Collins to authorize the payment of bills. The motion carried.
A letter was received from Mr. Carl Salser, President of the Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference, concerning not using the rain date for the district track meet and the re-throwing of the boys’ discus. A motion was made by Bob Wicker and seconded by Gary Elder to refer the letter to the track and field committee. The motion carried.
A short discussion was held about combining the “AA” and the “AAA” track and field meets.
The baseball and softball tournaments were affected by poor weather conditions. Many games had to be re-scheduled. Also, in future years there is a possibility of playing final games on Saturday rather than during the week.
There will be a financial committee meeting to discuss officials’ fees and a football committee meeting on July 7, 2004 at Aiello’s Café.
Tony Flint, Chairman of the Sportsmanship Committee, presented the schools that were nominated to receive the 2003 – 2004 District 9 Sportsmanship Award. A motion was made by Gary Elder and seconded by Roger Collins to present the 2003 -2004 award to the following schools: Brockway Area High School, Elk County Catholic High School, and Union High School. The motion carried.
Also discussed were various ways to get greater participation in the sportsmanship awards program.
The principal of Johnsonburg Area High School reported his baseball coach used an ineligible player during the baseball season. A motion was made by Roger Collins and seconded by Gary Elder to have the principal explain, in writing, the situation and the corrective measures to be taken by Johnsonburg area High School to prevent a similar situation from occurring in the future. The motion carried unanimously.
Bob Wicker, Chairman of the Policy Committee, reported on the progress of his committee. He explained the written policy to prevent the situation that occurred during the 2004 election from occurring in the future years. A motion was made by Bob Wicker and seconded by Tony Flint to adopt Article 5.2.1.1 and Article 5.2.1.2 was written in the policy manual. The motion carried unanimously. Aaron Straub represent District 9 at the May 26, 2004 Board of Directors’ meeting. He summarized the results of the meeting.
The next District 9 Committee meeting will be on August 11, 2004 at 9:00 Am at Elk County Catholic High School.
A motion was made by Gary Elder and seconded by Tom Wagner. The meeting adjourned at 2:55 PM.
