DISTRICT 9
COMMITTEE MEETING
APRIL 28, 2011
The
District 9 Committee held the April 28, 2011 meeting at Aiello’s Café in
A motion was made by Roger Collins and seconded by Randy Cathcart to accept the minutes of the January 2011 meeting. The motion carried unanimously.
FINANCE:
A motion was made by Bob Wicker and seconded by Susan Valentine to accept the treasurer’s reports. The motion carried unanimously. Accounts payable were reviewed.
Financial reports from the basketball, team wrestling, and individual wrestling tournaments were presented.
Expense reimbursements for PIAA steering committee meetings were reviewed.
A motion was made by Tim Walter and seconded by Tom Wagner to refer the amounts paid for rental fees for District 9 championship events to the budget committee. The motion carried unanimously.
The swimming and diving financial report will be distributed in June.
The cost and format for evaluating officials will be discussed at the June meeting.
COMMUNICATIONS:
Letters
were received from
School reporting a violation in the seeding method used at a junior high school wrestling tournament. Schools were permitted to enter more than one wrestler in a weight class. A motion was made by Tim Walter and seconded by Susan Valentine for Chairman Manners to write a letter to the schools instructing the schools not to use the previous format. The motion carried unanimously.

CHAIRMAN’S UPDATE:
A summary of the last P.I.A.A. Board of Director’s meeting was e-mailed to District 9 schools.
The PIAA Strategic Planning Committee is investigating reducing the number of contests per sport. If adopted, the number of contests would remain the same for football which is a concern to many. Any principals that want to add input into this discussion please e-mail Jim Manners.
The terms “bounded and non-bounded” schools may be used in redefining classifications. More information will be coming.
ADMINISTRATIVE:

was made by Kevin Doverspike and seconded by Sandi Hanes to grant athletic
eligibility to a
A motion was made by Kevin Doverspike and seconded by Bill Vassallo to support the change in the enrollment standards and the method used to calculate the enrollment numbers for the host school in cooperative sports agreements. The motion passed by a 12 to 1 vote. (Bob Wicker voting against the motion)
A PIAA/District 9 Workshop is being considered by the district committee. The workshop would be for principals and athletic directors.

ADMINISTRATIVE COMMITTEES:
AUDIT:
The annual district audit will take place in July 2011. Any administrator who would like to serve on the audit committee should contact Susan Valentine. .
OFFICIALS:
The officials’ representatives will survey other PIAA districts, to determine the number of officials hired for district championship events. The report is due at the June meeting.
SPORTSMANSHIP:
The number of coaches and athletes disqualified were reviewed.
WEBSITE:
A reminder to schools, please update your school’s information on the District 9 Website. Championship information will be posted on the website.
Transfers, foreign exchange students, eligibility requests, etc. should be typed and completed on PIAA forms. Other correspondence should be submitted by e-mail to Chairman Manners.
SPORTS SPECIFIC COMMITTEES:
GOLF:
There will be two classifications for golf in the next cycle.
FOOTBALL:
The Board of Directors is looking at three proposals to reduce the number of weeks in the football season to 15 weeks. The football committee will meet to consider semi-final football games being played at the higher seeded team’s venue.
The principals and athletic directors of the “AAA” schools met to consider using the 10th play date for a District 9 “AAA” semi-final game.
SOFTBALL:
Bill Vassallo has been appointed the softball chairman.
The entry date will be May 19th and games will count for seeding through May 21st.
BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL:
A motion was made by Randy Cathcart and seconded by Tim Walter to waiver the minimum number of contests to participate in district baseball and softball due to the poor weather conditions during the 2011 season. The motion carried unanimously
TENNIS:
There are three “AAA” teams and three “AA” teams entered in the district team championship tournament.
VOLLEYBALL:
The Districts 6, 8, 9, and 10 boys will compete in the regional volleyball tournament. District 8 has been added to the regional tournament.
WRESTLING and BASKETBALL
The District 9 tournaments were reviewed
Following the district committee meeting the Annual Principals’ meeting was held:
A number of district committee members presented various informational items to the group.
Mr. Brad Cashman presented an update on various P.I.A.A. issues that affect District 9 Schools.

The Annual District 9 banquet followed.
The next District 9 Committee meeting will be on June 8, 2011 at Aiello’s Café at 9:00 AM.
