DISTRICT 9 COMMITTEE MEETING

JANUARY 21, 2004

RIDGWAY, PA

 

On January 21, 2004, the District 9 Committee met at Aiello’s Café in Ridgway, PA.  Chairman Hoover called the meeting to order.

The following members were present: D.J. Bevevino, Roger Collins, Gary Elder, Tony Flint, Denny Geitner, Terry Hoover, Jeff Jovenitti, Jerry Linsenbigler, Jim Manners, Dave Stanley, Larry Stiner, Aaron Straub, Susan Valentine, Tom Wagner, and Bob Wicker,

A motion was made by Gary Elder and seconded by Susan Valentine to accept the minutes of the December 10, 2004 meeting with the following correction concerning the December 10, 2003 hearings:  The result of the first hearing was based on Article 6, Section 8-A.  The result of the second hearing was based on Article 6, Section 9. The motion carried. 

A motion was made by D.J. Bevevino and seconded by Tony Flint to accept the treasurer’s report.  The motion carried.

A motion was made by Roger Collins and seconded by Jim Manners to authorize the payment of bills.  The motion carried. 

Dr. William Kauffman, Superintendent of Clarion Area School District, addressed the committee concerning his school district’s policy for tuition students.  Dr. Kauffman gave the committee members a copy of the Clarion Area School District’s Non-District Resident Student Tuition Guidelines.  The present policy will be reviewed after two years.

 

TRANSFERS AND ELIGIBILITY:

 

Mr. Carl Salser, Principal of Union High School, and Mr. Scott Kindel, Athletic Director at Union High School, requested that the District 9 Committee waive the attendance policy under Article 3, Section 3 for a Union High School student.  Testimony was presented.  A motion was made by Roger Collins and seconded by Tony Flint to grant the waiver.  The motion passed by an 11 to 0 vote.

 

A student who transferred from Punxsutawney Area High School to Central Catholic High School and had been declared ineligible for one year is now eligible to participate in basketball at Central Catholic High School.

 

Mr. David London, Principal at Punxsutawney Area High School, responded to a complaint by a citizen that the Punxsutawney Area High School recruited a student from Purchase Line High School.  A motion was made by Larry Stiner and seconded by Gary Elder to accept the explanation provided by the Punxsutawney Area High School for accepting the student and the transfer was not for athletic intent.  There was not sufficient evidence to call for a hearing on the charge.  The motion passed unanimously.

               

                A decision on an international student living in the DuBois Area School District will be considered at the February meeting.  The committee is seeking additional information before reaching a decision.

 

                A motion was made by Larry Stiner and seconded by Susan Valentine to approve the transfer of Chelsea Rae Chestnut to the Brookville Area High School.  The motion was approved unanimously.

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

 

CHEERLEADING (Jeff Jovenitti, Chairman)

                Participation in competitive cheerleading continues to grow.  At a future meeting, the PIAA Board of Directors will discuss adding cheerleading as a recognized sport by the PIAA.

 

FOOTBALL (Larry Stiner, Chairman)

                The Board of Directors must approve the inter-district football brackets for the 2004 – 2006 seasons.

 

 

BASKETBALL (Jim Manners, Chairman)

                Next year the regular season will be shortened by one week.  If the Board of Directors approves the concept of eight teams needed to receive a position in inter-district competition, basketball may not be affected.

                Schools are reminded to use their “pin numbers” to enter the district basketball playoffs.

 

WRESTLING (Terry Hoover, Chairman)

                The materials to enter the district wrestling competition have been placed on the District 9 Website.  Hard copies of the entry materials have not been mailed to schools.

 

MERCHANDISE (Jerry Linsenbigler, Chairman)

                A summary of merchandise sales for fall sports was presented.  Information will be sent to schools detailing the sale of t-shirts for basketball and wrestling playoffs.

 

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES:

                Due to the increase in cost, the surcharge to PIAA event insurance will remain at $200.00 per site.

 

                 The PIAA is in a much better financial position than in the past few years.

 

                Starting in the 2004 - 2005 school year, there will be team golf competition.  An entry fee of $25.00 per golfer per day will be charged.

 

                A parking fee of $10.00 per vehicle will be charged at the PIAA cross-country meet.

 

                Schools are encouraged to have their coaches join the Pennsylvania Coaches Association.

 

OLD BUSINESS:

None

 

NEW BUSINESS:

                A motion was made by Gary Elder and seconded by Susan Valentine to permit Jim Manners to represent District 9 at the January 31, 2004 Board of Directors meeting. The motion carried unanimously.

 

NOTES:

                The basketball ball committee will meet at 9:00 AM on February 11, 2004.  This is prior to the

Regular District 9 meeting.

 

The policy and finance committees will meet after the February 11, 2004 district committee meeting.

 

The next District 9 meeting will be on February 11, 2004 at Aiello’s Café in Ridway at 11:00 AM.

 

A motion was made by Tony Flint and seconded by Tom Wagner to adjourn.  The motion carried.
