DISTRICT 9 COMMITTEE
MINUTES
The District 9 Committee held the August 14, 2002 meeting at Elk County Catholic High School.
The following members were present: Roger Collins, Garry Elder, Terry Hoover, Jerry Linsenbigler, Frank Palaggo, Aaron Straub, Larry Stiner, Susan Valentine, and Tom Wagner.
Chairman Hoover called the meeting to order at 9:40 AM.
A motion was made by Tom Wagner and seconded by Jerry Linsenbigler to accept the minutes of the June 26, 2002 meeting. The motion carried.
A motion was made by Susan Valentine and seconded by Jim Manners to accept the treasurer’s report. The motion carried.
A motion was made by Jim Manners and seconded by Susan Valentine to authorize the payment of bills. The motion carried.
Susan Valentine reported that the audit committee met on July 29, 2002. The committee found no inconsistencies, errors, or unsubstantiated use of funds. Ms Susan Valentine, Principal of Northern Potter High School, Mr. Rick Moore, Principal of Otto-Eldred High School, and Mr. Carl Salzer, Principal of Union High School conducted the audit.
A letter of confirmation was received from the Brookville Area School District’s Board of Directors concerning the high school’s action plan to improve sportsmanship within their high school.
A volleyball tournament application was received from Union High School. NOTE: If a tournament is not sponsored or affiliated with a high school, a tournament application needs to be submitted.
A transfer form was received from Curwensville Area High School. A motion was made by Larry Stiner and seconded by Frank Palaggo to grant athletic eligibility to Caitlin E. Capatch. The motion carried.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
WRESTLING: (Terry Hoover, Chairman)
The wrestling committee met prior to the committee meeting and will present a report at the September meeting.
TRACK AND FIELD: (Bob Tonkin, Chairman)
As a result of the 2001 – 2002 “AA” track and field championship meet held at Clarion University, the chairman felt the need to investigate other options to give our District 9 athletes a better opportunity to qualify and receive higher seeds for the PIAA track and field championships. On July 17, 2002 Gary Elder, D.J. Bevevino, and the chairman toured five stadiums to review the best site or sites to hold the District 9 Track and Field Championships.
A motion was made by Jim Manners and seconded by Roger Collins to hold the “AAA” District 9 track and field meet at Brookville Area High School. The meet will be held on May 14, 2003. May 15, 2003 will be used as the make-up date. The motion carried.
A motion was made by Susan Valentine and seconded by Jerry Linsenbigler to hold the “AA” track and field meet at Brookville Area High School on May16, 2003. May 17, 20003 will be used as the make-up date. The motion carried.
BOYS’ GOLF: (Frank Palaggo, Chairman)
Twelve golfers plus ties will advance to the second day of the boys’ tournament.
OLD BUSINESS:
All corrections and changes for the District 9 Handbook need to be sent to Aaron Straub as soon as possible. Each District 9 school will receive two copies of the handbook.
Since cheerleading is not recognized as a sport by the PIAA, the District 9 Committee is not permitted to sponsor the District 9 Cheerleading Tournament. Cheerleading competition will take place but the competition will not be under the jurisdiction of the District 9 Committee. Jeff Jovenitti will contact all schools that expressed an interested in the cheerleading tournament.
A motion was made by Gary Elder and seconded by Aaron Straub to retain Bob Tonkin as the District 9 secretary/treasurer. The motion carried.
A letter was received from Mr. Brad Cashman concerning a possible situation where Greensburg-Salem High School will not honor a basketball contract with Punxsutawney Area High School. The district committee will continue to monitor the situation.
INFORMATIONAL ITEMS:
Please be aware of the change in the billing procedure for PIAA Handbooks, PIAA dues, and rulebooks.
The cost of insurance for operating the PIAA continues to increase.
Hopefully, the financial picture for the PIAA is getting better. The PIAA office hopes to show a profit at the end of this year.
Chairman Hoover represented District 9 at the National Convention that was held in Boston. All of the people inducted in the High School Hall of Fame recognized the positive influence of their high school coaches.
The PIAA is advertising for the position of legal counsel. Information concerning the position can be found on the PIAA website.

THE NEXT DISTRICT 9 COMMITTEE MEETING WILL BE HELD ON WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 2002 AT AIELLO’S CAFÉ IN RIDGWAY, PA. THE MEETING WILL BEGIN AT 9:30 AM.
A motion was made by Gary Elder and seconded by Roger Collins to adjourn. The motion carried. The meeting adjourned at 12:00.
